Bamidbar

The passuk states, “and these are the children of Aharon and Moshe…” but the Torah only mentions the names of Aharon’s children. Rashi writes that because Moshe taught Aharon’s children Torah therefore, they are called Moshe’s children. This teaches us whoever teaches Torah to the son of his friend, it is as though he gave birth to him.

The Gemara states there are three partners in a person: Hashem, his father, and his mother.  Hashem’s unique partnership is that He gives the person a ruach and a neshama. Based on this Rav Bergman writes that one who teaches Torah is as though he gave birth to him because he implants into the person a ruach and neshama of kedushah, thereby joining Hashem’s partnership. In this instance, the father and mother’s part, however, remain unaffected.

The Gemara quotes Raish Lakish who states: If you teach Torah to the son of your friend, it is as though “you made him’ as it states by Avraham, “ואת הנפש אשר עשו בחרן, and the souls which they made in Charan.” Targum Onkelos translates this as “and the souls which they subjugated to the Torah in Charan.” By bringing someone to the light of the Torah it is as if you made him. Also, Chazal write when you teach a perek to another person, it as though you created him, embroidered him, and brought him into the world. By teaching another person it is not just the ruchnius that is considered created anew, but even the gashmius is considered as created anew! When one learns Torah, he becomes transformed and changed into a better and more holy spiritual Yid and becomes a different being.

The Nefesh HaChaim writes that a person is created similar to Hashem – that he too can create worlds and destroy them. Based on a person’s avodah in this world he could strengthen and ruin in some way the entire world. If so, when one learns Torah, he implants inspiration and motivation, and has the potential to cause people all over the world to improve.

May we learn Hashem’s Torah and become a beryah chadasha and influence the entire world!
